For the purposes of the EU/UK GDPR, Novo Media Inc. is the controller of personal data processed through the Site. For California privacy law purposes, Novo Media Inc. is the “business.”
When you visit the Site, we automatically collect limited technical information, including:
This is collected through cookies and similar technologies (see Section 4) and through our analytics provider (see Section 5).
If you sign in or share through a third-party service (for example a social platform that links to our content), or if a third party refers you to us, we may receive limited information from that service consistent with your settings on it.
We do notcollect special-category data (health, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) intentionally. Please don’t include such data in nominations, contributions, or messages unless it is necessary.
We use personal information for the following purposes:
Where the GDPR applies, our legal bases for processing are:
We use cookies and similar technologies (pixels, local storage) to operate the Site and to understand how it is used.
Categories we use:
We do not use cookies for advertising or to build cross-site behavioral profiles.
Your choices:
We use a small number of vetted third-party providers to run the Site. They process personal data on our behalf under contracts that limit how they may use it.
| Provider | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics (Google LLC) | Aggregate Site analytics. We enable IP anonymization and have not enabled Google Signals or advertising features. | IP address (truncated), pages viewed, referrer, device/browser data, pseudonymous identifier. |
| Stripe, Inc. | Process one-time financial contributions. | Your payment details (entered directly with Stripe), name, email, billing address, contribution amount. |
| Email service provider | Deliver our newsletter and transactional emails (e.g., contribution receipts). | Your email address, your name (if provided), engagement data such as opens/clicks. |
| Hosting and infrastructure providers | Run the Site (web hosting, content delivery, security, error logging). | Server logs, including IP and request metadata. |
We may also share information:
We do not sell or “share” personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Nominations.Submitting a nomination is voluntary. We may publish details about a nominee (name, role, public bio, why they were recognized) if they appear in the Powered 500 or similar feature. We do not publish your identity as a nominator without your consent. If a nominee asks us to remove their information, we will review the request — recognizing that some information may remain for editorial integrity (e.g., past Powered 500 entries are part of the public record).
Editorial contributions. Submitting a pitch or piece does not guarantee publication. If we publish your work we will credit you as agreed. We retain records of submissions and correspondence to manage rights and to defend any claims. You retain ownership of your work; the rights you grant us are addressed separately in our contributor agreement.
Financial contributions. Contributions support our journalism. Unless we tell you otherwise, contributions are not tax-deductible. Your name and the fact you contributed may appear in a list of supporters only if you have explicitly opted in.
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it for, and to meet our legal and accounting obligations. In broad terms:
When we no longer need information we delete or anonymize it.
Novo Media Inc. is based in the United States. If you access the Site from outside the US, your information will be transferred to and processed in the US and other countries where our service providers operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK Addendum) to protect personal data transferred internationally.
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to:
To exercise these rights, email hello@poweredmagazine.com with the request and enough information for us to identify you. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law (generally within 30 days; we will tell you if we need longer).
Your rights as listed above apply. The legal bases for our processing are described in Section 3. If we transfer your data outside the EEA/UK we use the safeguards described in Section 8. You can complain to your local supervisory authority — for example, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk) or the relevant EU Data Protection Authority — although we’d appreciate the chance to address your concern first.
In the previous 12 months we have collected the categories of personal information described in Section 2 for the business purposes described in Section 3, and disclosed it to the categories of recipients described in Section 5. We have not “sold” or “shared” personal information as those terms are defined in the CCPA/CPRA, and we do not knowingly process the personal information of consumers under 16 for sale or sharing.
You have the right to:
To submit a request, email hello@poweredmagazine.com. We will verify your identity using the information we already hold (typically by confirming control of the email address you used with us). You may use an authorized agent; we will require proof of authorization.
The Site is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 for readers in the EU/UK), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, email hello@poweredmagazine.com and we will delete it.
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information — including encryption in transit, access controls, vetted service providers, and regular review. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
The Site links to third-party sites and content. This Policy does not apply to those sites; please read their own privacy notices.
Some browsers transmit a “Do Not Track” signal. There is no industry consensus on how to interpret it, so we do not respond to DNT signals as such. We do honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal where required by law.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, take additional steps as required by law (for example, sending an email notice to newsletter subscribers). Please review the Policy periodically.
Questions, requests, or complaints? We’d like to hear from you.
