After spinning out of NASA in 2010, Marshall built and now operates the largest satellite constellation in history — roughly 200 spacecraft that image the entire Earth daily, supplying governments, farmers, and investigators with data that has tracked Russian troop movements and documented human rights abuses.
Will Marshall is the Co-Founder and CEO of Planet Labs, the Earth-imaging company that operates the largest constellation of satellites in history.
Marshall co-founded Planet in 2010 with fellow NASA scientists Chris Boshuizen and Robbie Schingler, spinning out from NASA Ames Research Center. Planet's fleet of approximately 200 small satellites images the entire Earth daily, providing data used by governments, farmers, insurers, investors, and scientists to monitor everything from deforestation and illegal fishing to crop yields and economic activity. The company went public via SPAC in 2021 and has become an essential data provider for the global economy. Planet's imagery has been used to document human rights abuses, track Russian military movements in Ukraine, and monitor climate change. Born in the UK, Marshall earned a PhD in physics from Oxford before joining NASA. He has been named to Time's 100 Most Influential People and is a prominent advocate for using space technology to address climate change and other global challenges. His creation of essential Earth observation infrastructure represents one of the most impactful applications of space technology.
