Starting in 1996 from his grandmother's basement with a moisture-wicking t-shirt he sold from his car trunk, Kevin Plank built Under Armour into a $5 billion publicly traded rival to Nike and Adidas before returning as CEO in 2024 to engineer a turnaround.
Kevin Plank is the Founder and CEO of Under Armour, the athletic performance apparel company he started in 1996 from his grandmother's basement in Washington, DC.
A former University of Maryland football player, Plank developed a moisture-wicking synthetic fabric that kept athletes cool and dry, and grew Under Armour into a publicly traded company with multibillion-dollar annual revenue, competing directly with Nike and Adidas. After stepping down as CEO in 2019, Plank returned to lead the company in April 2024 and continues to drive its turnaround and brand revitalization.
