After leaving OpenAI — where he led GPT-2 and GPT-3 — Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021, building it into a $7B-plus AI safety company whose Claude model now competes directly with OpenAI and Google for enterprise dominance.
Dario Amodei is the Co-Founder and CEO of Anthropic, the AI safety company behind Claude, one of the leading large language models in the world.
Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021 with his sister Daniela Amodei and other former members of OpenAI, with a mission to build AI systems that are safe, beneficial, and understandable. Anthropic has raised tens of billions of dollars from investors including Google, Amazon, Lightspeed, Iconiq, and Fidelity, and was most recently valued at $183 billion in its September 2025 Series F. The company's research on constitutional AI, alignment, and interpretability has advanced the field of AI safety, and Claude has gained substantial enterprise and consumer traction. Before Anthropic, Amodei served as VP of Research at OpenAI, where he led the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3.
