Tell us about yourself and your business.

My name is Robin Vermaat. I’m from the Netherlands and have been living in the UAE for over a decade. In 2021, I started my own consulting business, RV Consultancy, which provides logistics and management solutions on a commercial level. We provide commercial growth strategies to the logistics/3PL industry, and for the management business, we cater to all industries with our soft skill processes and training.

What were your biggest challenges when starting your business?

Securing businesses and projects on a consistent basis was one of our biggest challenges when starting our business. We had to work hard to establish ourselves as a reliable and trustworthy partner for our clients and build a strong reputation in the industry. However, through persistence and dedication, we were able to overcome these challenges and grow our business successfully.

How have you handled success and failure over the course of your career?

Always move on; never quit. Failure is part of life and of business when you start, so don’t be afraid to fail. Learn from your mistakes and use them as opportunities to improve and grow. Similarly, when you experience success, don't become complacent and always strive to continue growing and improving.

What strategies do you use to stay competitive in a changing market?

Try to be innovative and persistent. The market is competitive, but if you have a good product or solution that is "missing,” try to capitalise on that while providing your proposition. Additionally, staying up-to-date with industry trends and consumer behaviour can also give you an edge. It's important to be adaptable and willing to pivot your strategy if necessary.

What motivations drive you to keep pushing forward in the face of adversity?

Adversity always happens This can’t be avoided, but you need to be agile and keep pushing forward, as there will be a moment when things will click in your favour. Every day is a new learning day. It's important to have a clear goal and purpose in mind, as this will give you the drive and determination to overcome any obstacles that come your way. Additionally, having a support system of friends, family, or mentors can provide encouragement and help you stay motivated during tough times.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their chosen field?

Never give up, keep pushing forward, and create a good client portfolio or connection when starting out that can support you when needed. It's also important to continuously learn and improve your skills, as the industry is constantly evolving. Seek out opportunities for professional development and networking to stay ahead of the game.

What trends do you see emerging in your industry that are likely to shape its future growth and development?

Automatization, digitalization, and drones are the current trends that the logistics industry is looking into, and with RV Consultancy, we provide those services to our customers to fulfil their needs and requirements.

What have been the most rewarding and difficult aspects of your chosen career or business path?

Being nominated and winning awards for my work by several institutions is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career and business path. It shows recognition for your hard work. On the other hand, dealing with difficult clients or navigating through tough economic times can be challenging. However, overcoming these obstacles has helped me grow both personally and professionally.

Are there any skills or areas of expertise that you think are essential for success in your field?

You must be persistent, agile, flexible, and, in my opinion, have out-of-the box thinking. With all this, you have a good chance of being successful in your field. Having strong communication and interpersonal skills is also crucial. Being able to effectively collaborate with others and build relationships can greatly enhance your career prospects.
